Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her said): People used to bring their newly born babies to the messenger of Allah (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and he would supplicate for blessings for them and do Tahneek (rubbing the baby's palates with chewed (or softened) dates).
Note: Many scholars had said that Tahneek was a thing that was done by the prophet only, which others cannot do, but other scholars said that Tahneek was the habit of the Arabs even before Islam, and any one can do it for their child, and Allah knows best.
